SFOC Publishes Book
Sharon, Massachusetts: Open Spaces, Special Places, a 32-page book celebrating open space, local history, and places frequented by Sharon residents in their daily lives, has been published by SFOC to promote public awareness of the importance of preserving land and water resources. All net funds raised from the sale of this keepsake volume will go to benefit land preservation in Sharon. Price is $15 per book.
This alphabet-format text, printed in glowing colors
on recycled paper, was written by third-grade students studying local
history and illustrated by high school artists as a community project
under the Louis Feinstein Service Program. Examples of its illustrations
and text include A:Aquifer, D:Deborah Sampson Park, H:Hammershop
Pond, J:Job Swift House, K:King Philip's Rock conservation land,
N:Neponset River Watershed, V:Vernal Pool, and X marks the spot (Sharon
Center) as well as a map of preserved land in Sharon. The first student
writers and artists worked six years ago; the most recent, only a
few months ago.
The book was conceived by Conservation Commission chairman and teacher Peg Arguimbau
as a way to raise the awareness of townspeople, young and old, about the importance
of conservation and the beauty of the town. Alice Cheyer, a book editor, and
Peggy Greenfield, a graphic designer, agreed to contribute their time and talents
to achieve a well-written, attractively designed book that showcases the original
student work. Publication was supported by the Dedham Institution for Savings
Foundation, with a donation from the Sharon Cooperative Bank and a private loan.
